4、withthefastest-growingpopulationsofsinglepeople—China,IndiaandBrazil—arealsoamongthosewiththefastestgrowingeconomies.Themerethoughtoflivingaloneoncesparkedanxiety,dreadandvisionsofloneliness.Butthoseimagesaredated.Nowthemostprivilegedpeopleonearthusetheirresourcestoseparatefromoneanother,tobu

5、yprivacyandpersonalspace.Livingalonecomportswithmodernvalues.Itpromotesfreedom,personalcontrolandself-realization—allprizedaspectsofcontemporarylife.Itislessfeared,too,forthecrucialreasonthatlivingalonenolongersuggestsanisolatedorless-sociallife.Afterinterviewingmorethan300singletons(mytermfo

6、rpeoplewholivealone)duringnearlyadecadeofresearch,I’veconcludedthatlivingaloneseemstoencouragemore,notless,socialinteraction.Paradoxically,ourspecies,solongdefinedbygroupsandbythenuclearfamily,hasbeenabletoembarkonthisexperimentinsololivingbecauseglobalsocietieshavebecomesointerdependent.Dyna
