3、untrysideinDorset,England.Thefamilyinsisteduponhiseducationathomeforhispoorhealth.Childashewas,thetranquilcountrycomfortgraduallyinstilledintohimtheloveandrespectfornature.Nevertheless,inordertofurtherhisstudyofarchitecturewhichhewasapprenticedtolearnat16,hewenttoLondon
4、andworkedasanarchitectuntilhegotmarried.ThoughThomasHardywasmostfamousforhisnovels,hisoriginalinterestlayinpoetry,whichmaybeasurpriseforthosewhoonlyreadhisnovels.However,beingasensitiveman,hegaveupwritingpoemswhenhisfirstpublishedpoemswereseverelycriticized.Then,hepicke
5、dupwritingnovels.HisnovelDesperateRemedies(1871)wasatragicfailure.Undaunted,hethencontinuedtowritetwonovels,UndertheGreenWoodTree(1872)andAPairofBlueEyes(1873),whosesmallsuccessinfusedconfidenceintohimandledhimtowritehisfirstmasterpiece,namely,FarfromtheMaddingCrowd(187
