3、mportantmeeting.Asyoumayknow,heiscurrentlyonanofficialvisittoSerbiaandMontenegro,whereyesterday,WorldPressFreedomDay,heparticipatedintheawardceremonyfortheUNESCO/GuillermoCanoWorldPressFreedomPrize.IampleasedtoinformyouthattheDirector-Generalwillbebackintimefortheclosingofthemeeting.Onhisbe
4、half,itgivesmegreatpleasuretowelcomeyoualltoUNESCOfortheopeningofthethirdsessionoftheIntergovernmentalCouncilfortheInformationforAllProgramme.IwelcometheRepresentativesofMemberStatesandnon-governmentalorganizations,andtheobserversfromotherorganizations.Iwouldliketotakethisopportunitytocordi
5、allythanktheChairpersonoftheCouncil,Ms.Fernandez-Baca,forherexcellentworkduringthelasttwoyears.ThroughyourremarkableskillinchairingtheproceedingsandyourpoliticalsensitivityyouhaveconsiderablyadvancedtheworkoftheCouncil.IknowthattheBureauwasofgreatsupporttoyourworkandIwouldliketocommendallit
6、sMembersfortheirexcellentcontributionsandtheiroutstandingengagement.ThisthirdmeetingofyourCouncilcomesatanimportantmomentas,duringthelastyear,theInformationSocietyhasgainedworldwideattentionandbecomeamajorsubjectofinternationaldebate,thanksinparticulartotheWorldSummitontheInformationSociety
7、heldinGenevainDecember2003.Thisoutstandingeventwasattendedbyover11,000participantsaswellasHeadsofStateandgovernmentsfromover60countries,andwillbecontinuedinTunisinNovember2005.TheGenevaPhaseoftheWorldSummitwasverysuccessfulforUNESCOforanumberofreasons.It
