2、msinstalled.AnindexsystemwasintroducedinHongKongtomeasuretheexternalairquality,butnosystemhasyetbeenintroducedformeasuringinternalairquality,northelegislationtocontrolit.TheHongKonggovernmentstatesthatmorethan32%ofcommercialbuildingsand37%ofshoppingarcadeshavesickbuildingsyndrome,w
3、hichleadstonausea,dizziness,headaches,sorethroats,noseirritation,sinuscongestion,andothersymptomsintheoccupiers.Inthisstudy,themajorcauses,design,construction,users’habitualmodes,andmitigatingmeasureswillbeinvestigated,withsupportingcasestudiesinHongKong.Apreliminaryinvestigation,a
4、irsampleanalysis,andend-users’feedbackfromquestionnaireswillbegatheredandanalyzedtoestablishalong-termsolutionforairqualityproblems.IntroductionTheAmericanNationalStandardsInstitute/AmericanSocietyofHeating,RefrigeratingandAir-ConditioningEngineers(ANSI/ASHRAE)Standard62-2004(ASHRA
5、E2004)contendsthatacceptableindoorairquality(IAQ)is“Airinwhichtherearenoknowncontaminantsatharmfulconcentrationsasdeterminedbycognizantauthoritiesandwithwhichasubstantialmajority(80%ormore)ofthepeopleexposeddonotexpressdissatisfaction.”WorldHealthOrganization(WHO)(1986)describesthe
6、sameas“Thephysicalandchemicalnatureofindoorair,asdeliveredtothebreathingzoneofbuildingoccupants,whichproducesacompletestateofmental,physicalandsocialwell-beingoftheoccupants,andnotmerelytheabsenceofdiseaseorinfirmity.”Therewasgrowingconcerninthepastdecaderegardingcomplaintsattribut
7、edtoIAQ.AsurveyshowedthatpeopleinHongKongspentabout85%oftheirtimeindoors(Chauetal.2002).Somecountries,includingCanada,Japan,Korea,Singapore,Sweden,UK,andtheUnitedStates,conductedIAQstudieswiththeaimofsettingstandardsandguidelinesforalongtime[CrandallandSieber1996;Malkinetal.1996;Mc
