3、tedStates.Theyspokemanydifferentlanguages.Somewerefarmers,somewerehunters.Somefoughtmanywars,otherswerepeaceful.Thesegroupsarecalledtribes.TheirnamesareknowntomostAmericans...theSenecas,theMohawks,theSeminole,theCherokeetonameonlyafew.VOICEONE:Thesetribeshaddevelopedtheirowncultu
4、resmanyyearsbeforethefirstEuropeansettlersarrived.Eachhadakindofreligion,astrongspiritualbelief.Manytribessharedasimilarone.TheIndiansontheeastcoastsharedahighlydevelopedsystemoftrade.ResearcherssaydifferenttribesofnativeAmericanstradedgoodsallacrossthecountry.VOICETWO:Thefirstre
5、cordedmeetingsbetweenEuropeansandthenativesoftheeastcoasttookplaceintheFifteenHundreds.FishermenfromFranceandtheBasqueareaofSpaincrossedtheAtlanticOcean.TheysearchedforwhalesalongtheeastcoastofNorthAmerica.Theymadetemporarycampsalongthecoast.TheyoftentradedwiththelocalIndians.The
6、EuropeansoftenpaidIndianstoworkforthem.Bothgroupsfoundthistobeasuccessfulrelationship.Severaltimesdifferentgroupsoffishermentriedtoestablishapermanentsettlementonthecoast,buttheseverewintersmadeitimpossible.Thesefishingcampswereonlytemporary.VOICEONE:ThefirstpermanentsettlersinNe
