2、ganization).Wepresentaframeworkforanalyzingtheleader'spastjudgmentperformanceforuseasaguidetoprojectfuturejudgmentcapability.BoardsofDirectorsneedtoexplicitlyreviewCEOcandidatespastjudgments,carefullydiscussfuturejudgmentdilemmasCEOcandidatesmayface,andassesshow
3、welltheirexperienceshavepreparedthem.Thepaperalsolaysouthowtobuildaleadershippipelinethatbothassessesanddevelopsgoodleadershipjudgment.WANTED:CEOwithExtraordinaryLeadershipJudgmentByNoelTichyandChrisDeRoseCEOsuccessionhasneverbeenmoreimportantgloballyastheworldw

5、stoboardmemberswasleftwonderinghowtheircompaniesendedupinsuchbadshape.ManyCEOsoffinancialinstitutions–StanONealatMerril,ChuckPrinceatCiti,JamesCayneatBearStearns,FredGoodwinatRBStonameafew–losttheirjobsastheirflawedjudgmentsbecamepainfullyapparentandtheirinstitu
6、tionsfacedfailureorbailout.Manymorecorporateleaderswillbetestedinthemonthstocomebyrecession,depressedconsumersentiment,andunfriendlycapitalmarkets.Howwellcompaniesfareamidthecrisis,webelieve,willrestultimatelyonthejudgmentoftheirCEOs.First,wearenotsuggestingthat
7、thereareCEOswho,bygeneticgift,havethejudgmenttosingle‐handedlyleadtheirorganizationstosuccessintoday’scomplexenvironment.Therehavebeenmanyacademicdebatesregardingtheforceful,visionaryCEOversusthehumble,soft‐spokenCEO.AswelookatCEOsofthefuture,ourexperiencetellsu
