2、cember1999;inrevisedform27November2000AbstractThispaperexaminestheinsightsintodebatesaboutregionalagglomerationprovidedbytheBritishhigh-®delityindustry-BHFI).Thisgeographicalclusterofsmallspecialistcompaniesdisplaysworldleadershipinthesphereofhigh-qualitysoundreproductionbutonlyweakelementso
3、finstitutionalthickness,andlimitedinter-®rminteractions.Thereis,however,someevidenceinthisin-dustryofcollectivelearning,untradedinterdependenciesandindirectinstitutionalsupportintheformofgovernmentinfrastructureinpreviousdecades.Localisedinterdependencies,bothofthetradedandtheuntradedkind,pl
4、ayanimportantroleinfosteringclusteringofthesehi-®companiesbutmuchofthepropinquitycanbeattributedtoinertiaeectsasfoundersestablishnewbusinessesneartheiroldcompaniesand,or,theirplaceofresidence.Theclusteringofhi-®companiesinthesouth-eastisthereforelargelyare¯ectionoftheconcentrationofelitetech
