3、rossmotoractivities.Thesesignalsarenonstationaryinnature,invitingtime-frequencyanalysisinbothitslinearandbilinearaspects,toplayafundamentalroleinmotionidentification,includingfallfeaturesdeter-minationandclassification.Thisarticleemploysrealfalldatatodemonstrate
4、thesuccessofexistingdetectionalgorithmsaswellastoreportonsomeofthechallengesfacingtech-nologydevelopmentsforfalldetection.IntroductionTheelderlypopulationaged65yearsorolderisgrowing,andtheirratiotothepopulationaged20–64willreach35%in2030[1].Theworldwidepopulatio
5、nover65isprojectedtoincreasetoonebillioninimagelicensedbyingrampublishing,woman—©istockphoto.com/silviajansen2030.Anoverwhelmingmajorityofelder-liesexerciseself-carewithintheirownhomesmostofthetime.Oneoutofthreeelderlypeopleovertheageof65willfalleveryyear,andthe
6、percentagerisesfortheelderlyliv-inginlong-termcareinstitutions.Thefallcanresultininjuriesandreducedqualityoflifeand,unfortunately,itrepresentsoneoftheleadingcausesofdeathintheelderlypopulation.Eventually,theelderlywhoareathighriskoffallingwillhavetomovetoinstitu
7、tionalizedcare,whichcancostapproximatelyUS$3,500permonth.Mostseniorsareunabletogetupbythemselvesafterafall,anditwasreportedthat,evenwith-outdirectinjuries,halfofthosewhoexperiencedanextendedperiodoflyingonthefloor(morethananhour)diedwithinsixmonthsaftertheincide
