2、canteffortsinthisfieldwereinitiallydrivenbytheneedtoprovidedetectedandprocessedsignalsforairandballisticmissiledefensesystems.ThefirstprocessingworkwasontheSemi-AutomaticGroundEnvironment(SAGE)air-defensesystem,whichledtoalgorithmsandtechniquesfordetectionofaircraftinthepresenceofclutter.Thi
3、sworkwasquicklyfollowedbyprocessingeffortsinballisticmissiledefense,firstinsurface-acoustic-wavetechnology,inconcurrencewiththeinitiationofradarmeasurementsattheKwajaleinMissileRange,andthenbyexploitationofthenewlyevolvingtechnologyofdigitalsignalprocessing,whichledtoimportantcontributionsfo
4、rballisticmissiledefenseandFederalAviationAdministrationapplications.Morerecently,theLaboratoryhaspursuedthecomputationallychallengingapplicationofadaptiveprocessingforthesuppressionofjammingandcluttersignals.Thisarticlediscussesseveralimportantprogramsintheseareas.signalproc
5、essingatLin-oftechniquesdevelopedforonemissionareatootherTcolnLaboratoryhaditsgenesisinresearchef-missionareas.Forexample,LincolnLaboratory’sef-fortsundertakenattheMITRadiationLabo-fortsonairdefensewereappliedtotheneedsofairratoryduringWorldWarII[1].Theseefforts,alongtrafficcontrol,satellite
6、communicationcontributedwithsimilareffortsatBellTelephoneLaboratoriestodevelopmentsinspacesurveillance,andspeech[2,3],providedatheoreticalfoundationformanyprocessingandsolidstatephysicsbothcontributedimportantdevelopmentsinsignalprocessingatmanysignificantlytoradarsignalfiltering.Particularl
