3、reenhouses(RTGs).Thispaperaimstoquantifyandcompare,throughalifecycleassessment,theenvironmentalimpactofthecurrentlinearsupplysystemwithaRTGsystembyusingacasestudyfortheproductionoftomatoes.RESULTS:ThemainresultsindicatethatachangefromthecurrentlinearsystemtotheRTGsystemcouldresultinareduction,pe
4、rkilogramoftomatoes(thefunctionalunit),intherangeof44.4–75.5%forthedifferentimpactcategoriesanalysed,andsavingsofupto73.5%inenergyrequirements.Thesesavingsareassociatedwithre-utilisationofpackagingsystems(55.4–85.2%),minimisationoftransportrequirements(7.6–15.6%)andreductionofthelossofproductdur
5、ingtransportationandretailstages(7.3–37%).CONCLUSIONS:TheRTGmaybecomeastrategicfactorinthedesignoflow-carboncitiesinMediterraneanareas.Short-termimplementationinthecityofBarcelonacouldresultinsavingsof66.1tonnesofCOeq.ha−1whenconsideringtheglobal2warmingpotential,andof71.03tha−1whenconsideringth
