2、sknownoftherolesemiochemicalsplayinthematingsystemsoflonghornedbeetles(Coleoptera:Cerambycidae)intheprimitivesubfamilyPrioninae.Mallodondasystomus(Say),thehardwoodstumpborer,isawidelydistributedprioninenativetothesouthernUS.PreferredhostsofM.dasystomusincludeoak,sweetgum,sugarberryandh
3、ackberry;althoughtheyalsocolonizeavarietyofotherhardwoods.Here,westudythematelocationbehaviorofM.dasystomusbytestingthehypothesesthatthesexesaremutuallyattractedtovolatilesemanatingfromthelarvalhostandthatfemalesreleaseavolatilepheromonethatisattractivetomalesalone.InaY-tubeolfactomete
4、r,maleandfemaleM.dasystomusrespondedtovolatilesfromhostmaterial(i.e.,sweetgumandsugarberry).However,onlymalesrespondedtofemalesintheolfactometer,suggestingthatfemalesreleaseavolatilesexpheromone.Inchoiceexperimentsconductedinagreenhouse,wedeterminedthatbothmalesandfemalespreferhostover
5、non-hostmaterial.Infurtherbioassaysinthegreenhouse,maleschosehostmaterialcontainingalivefemaleoverthatcontainingalivemaleorhostmaterialalone.Thesefindingsarefurtherevidenceofthecriticalrolehostvolatilesandpheromonesplayinmatingsystemsoflonghornedbeetles.KeywordsLonghornedbeetles.sexphe
