3、izedrelationshipsposedforthepresentinvestigationareasynthesisofpriorresearchbythepresentauthorsontwodistinctbutcomplementaryconceptualmodelsofinnovation,concerningrespectively:therelationshipbetweencompetitivestrategyandinnovation,andtherelationshipbetweenproduction
4、processcharacter-isticsandinnovation.TheempiricalinvestigationiscarriedoutwithdataavailablefromtheMyersandMarquisstudyofsuccessfultechnologicalinnovationinfivedifferentindustrysegments.Theessentialaspectsofthehypothesizedrelationshipsarethatthecharacteristicsofthein
5、novativeprocesswillsystematicallycorrespondwiththestageofdevelop-mentexhibitedbythefirm'sproductionprocesstechnologyandwithitsstrategyforcompetitionandgrowth.Asamorespecificexampletheserelationshipspredictthattherewillbecoherentpatternsinthestimuliforinnovation(mark
6、et,productionornewtechnology);inthetypesofinnovation(productorprocess,originaloradopted,etc.)andinbarrierstoinnovation.Thepresentlyreportedstatisticalevidenceisdecidedlyfavorabletothehypo-thesizedrelationships,eventhoughtheadaptationsneededtoimplementtestswithexisti
7、ngdataintroducedependenciesthatlimitconclusionswhichwouldotherwisebewarranted.Thebroadimplicationisthatstrongandimportantrelationshipsexistamongthecapabilityofafirmtoinnovate,itscompetitivestrategyandthepostureofitsproductionresources.MOSTstudiesofnewproductandproce
