1、9LinearViscoelasticity9.1IntroductionThepreviouschaptershaveconsideredconstitutiveequationsthatdealpri-marilywithtwodifferenttypesofmaterialbehavior:elasticresponseofsolidsandviscousflowoffluids.Examplesofmaterialsthatbehaveelasti-callyundermodestloading,andatmoderatetempera
2、tures,aremetalssuchassteel,aluminum,andcopper,certainpolymers,andevencorticalbone.Examplesofviscousflowmayinvolveavarietyoffluidsrangingfromwatertopolymersundercertainconditionsoftemperatureandloading.Polymersareespeciallyinterestingbecausetheymaybehave(respond)ineitherelast
3、ic,viscous,orcombinedmanners.Atarelativemoderatetemper-atureandloading,apolymersuchaspolymethalmethacrylite(PMMA,plexi-glass),maybeeffectivelymodeledbyalinearelasticconstitutiveequation.However,atasomewhatelevatedtemperature,thesamematerialmayhavetobemodeledasaviscousfluid.
