3、thattreatslane-changingastemporaryblockages,becausethisiswhatisphysicallyobservedinreality.Formaximumaccuracylane-changingvehiclesaremodeledasdiscreteparticlesendowedwithlimitedaccelerationcapabilitiesthatinteractrealisticallywiththemulti-lanecontinuumstream.Thi
4、sdiscrete-continuum(hy-brid)setupisparsimonious;itrequiresonlyonemoreparameterthanthesimplekinematicwavemodel.Theextraparameteriseasytoestimateandinallourapplicationstakesphysicallymeaningfulvalues.We¯ndthatthemodelreproduces(andexplains)twobottleneckphenom-enap
5、reviouslythoughttobeunrelated:(i)thedropinthedischargerateoffreewaybottleneckswhencongestionbegins,and(ii)therelationbetweenthespeedofamovingbottleneckanditscapacity.Ongoingresearchalsoshowsthatthemodelcanreproducequalitativelyallthedetailedlane-speci¯cbehavioro

7、nselusive.Thispaperattemptsto¯llthisgap.Itconsidersfreewaysectionsawayfromdiverges,wherethemainincentivefordriverstochangelanesisincreasingtheirspeed.1Themainthesisisthatalane-changingvehicleactsasamovingbottleneckonitsdestinationlanewhileacceleratingtothespeedp
