2、tsandflighthardwaretosupporttheplannedhumanreturntotheMoon.DuringPhaseIIofthe2006LunarLanderPreparatoryStudy,ateamfromtheLangleyResearchCenterwastaskedwithdevelopingandrefiningtwoproposedLanderconcepts.TheDescent-Assisted,SplitHabitatLanderconceptusesadisposablebrakingstagetoperformthelunarorbitinse

3、rtionmaneuverandmostofthedescentfromlunarorbittothesurface.Thesecondconcept,theCargoStarHorizontalLander,carriesascentloadsalongitslongitudinalaxis,andisthenrotatedinflightsothatitsmainengines(mountedperpendiculartothevehiclelongitudinalaxis)arecorrectlyorientedforlunarorbitinsertionandahorizontalla

4、nding.BothLandershaveseparatecrewtransportvolumesandhabitatsforsurfaceoperations,andallowplacementoflargecargoelementsveryclosetothelunarsurface.Aspartofthisstudy,lightweight,efficientstructuralconfigurationsforthesespacecraftwereproposedandevaluated.Vehiclestructuralconfigurationswerefirstdeveloped
