3、ckofstandardizationbetweenthenumerousmaps,cataloguesandotherpublicationsthatmightreasonablybeexpectedtoshowcon-sistency.Theirdismayisnotwithoutsomefoundation.Changesandalterationsaretheanathemaofastable,standardizednomenclature,yeterrorsandinconsistenc
4、iesshouldbecorrected,andadditionshavetobemadeasstudiesofthelunarsurfacebecomemoreextensiveanddetailed.Lunarnomenclatureis,firstandforemost,amethodofcom-munication_akindofshorthandwherebyimportantsurfacefeaturescanbevisualizedimmediatelyuponseeingtheirn
5、ames,andlesserfea-turescanbereferredtowithouttheneedtoresorttolengthydescrip-tionsoftheirrelativeorabsolutelocations.Unfortunately,thesechangesandadditionshavenotalwaysbeencarriedoutadvisedlyorwiththeusers'bestinterestsinview.Thiswasespeciallythecasefo
6、rseveralyearsfrom1972onwards,whenthebasicconceptsandethicsofthesubjectweresubjugatedtothesupposedrequirementsforcertainmaps,andtothekudosderivingfromtheplace-mentofmanynewnamesonlunarfeatures.Althoughthatsituationwasfinallyrectified,ithasleftalegacyofc
7、onfusionthatwillplaguelunarnomenclatureforposterity.Forgeneralconvenience,itwasoriginallyintendedtoincludeinasingledocumentboththemanychangeseffectedduringthelasttwodec-ades,andtheNASAversionofthecurrentlyapprovednomenclature.Abriefsurveyoftheoriginsan
