3、cationinChina,includingChinesestudents,foreigntea-chersandlinguists,enregisterChinglishasalinguisticvariety.IarguethatChinglishisnotdistinguishedbythepresenceorabsenceofanyparticularlinguisticfeature,butalabelproducedintheintersubjectiveengagementsbetweenlanguagelearne
4、rsandnativespeakers.ChinglishisstructuredbyandreinforcestherelationsofexpertisewithintheChineseEnglishlanguagespeechcommunity,thusrepresentinglargeranxietiesaboutnationalismandmodernizationinaglobalcontext.*INTRODUCTION:THEMETADISCURSIVECONSTRUCTIONOF“CHINGLISH”PlainEn
5、glishisalanguagebasedonverbs.Itissimple,concise,vigorousand,aboveall,clear.Chinglishisalanguagebasedonnouns–vague,general,abstractnouns.Itiscomplicated,long-winded,ponderous,andobscure(Pinkham2000:170).“Chinglish,”aperceivedincorrectordeformedversionofStandardEnglish,c
6、ametointernationalprominenceduringtherecent2008SummerOlympicsandParalympicsinBeijing.1Formanyyearsnow,foreignvisitorstoChinahavebeencapturingandcirculatingexamplesofnonstandardEnglish,oftenofanonsen-sicalorhumorousquality(Radtke2007,2009).Withtheimminentarrivalofthou-s
