3、electionattainedthroughconventionalprogrammeswithouttheneedtodoanycontrolledpollinationandsimplifiedorpossiblynoexperimentalfieldtesting:bothconsideredtobethemostresource-demandingactivitiesinbreedingprogrammes.BWBcombinestheuseofgenotypicorphenotypicpre-selectionofsuperiorindividuals,informativeDNAma
4、rkersforfingerprintingandpedigreereconstructionofoffspringtoassemblenaturallycreatedfull-andhalf-sibfamiliesresultingfrommatingamongselectedparents,andquantitativegeneticsanalysestoidentifyelitegenotypesforfurthergeneticimprovementortheestablishmentofproductionpopulations.BWButilityisdemonstratedusing
5、aretrospectivestudyofDouglas-fir(Pseudotsugamenziesii)progenytestsconsistingofoffspringproducedfrom150controlledcrossesamong60parentsandestablishedoverthreesites.Theempiricalresultsaresupportedbytheoreticalexpectationsdemonstratinganticipatedminimumgeneticresponsecomparedwithconventionalapproaches.The
