2、atherthancomponentpartsofasingle,unitarysystem.Despitetheirdistinctidentitiesandimportancetothecountry’ssocial,politicalandeconomicdevelopment,China’sprovincesonlyrecentlybecameamajorfocusofinquirywiththeintroductionofreformanddecentralisation.Thisvolumeis

3、thefirstofaseriesexaminingeachofChina’sprovincesinreformanddealswithGuangxi,Hainan,Liaoning,Shandong,Shanghai,SichuanandZhejiang.Itisconcernedwiththeimpactofeconomicreformonsocialandpoliticalchangewithineachoftheprovinces.Theissuesrevealedbythisstudyarenot

4、onlythedeterminantsofprovincialpoliticsofcentral-provincialrelationsinChina,butalsowiderconcernsabouttheimpactofeconomicmodernisationonsocialandpoliticalchange.Thesevencasespresentedherehighlighttheeffectsofeconomicgrowthonclassformations,regionaldevelopme
