2、December2004;accepted11May2005AbstractThisarticlediscussesChina’stourismdevelopmentandpolicythroughadiscourseanalysisofDengXiaoping’stalksontourism.Fivetranscribedandofficiallypublishedtextsweredecodedtoidentifysententialanddiscoursetopicswhichwerethensemanticallycategor
3、izedintosixinterrelatedtopicdimensions:(1)conservationandenvironmentalprotection,(2)education/training/humanresources,(3)infrastructureandtourismfacilities,(4)management/operation/entrepreneurship,(5)marketingandpromotion,and(6)policy/planning/administration.Thesedimens
4、ionsjointlysupportedacentraltheme—tourismaseconomicdevelopment,whichwasrecurringthroughoutthediscourse.Acontextualizationofthecentralthemeandtopicaldimensionsalsorevealedthattourismwasaddressedasasignifier(orshowcase)ofreformandopenpoliciesthatwereinitiatedinChinafromthe
