4、nsonaccesstobiomasstives.ofIndia’spopulation).Nevertheless,theregionhasalowpopulationdensitycom-paredwiththerestofIndia.Theregionisunderdeveloped:themeanCenterforMonitoringofIndianEconomy(CMIE)indexofdevelopmentisaslowas82(100beingtheindexforthewholeofIndia).Ingeneral,theregionischaracterize

5、dbyrugged,undulatingterrain,smallisolatedvillages,anagropastoraleconomy,smalllandholdings,anddryfarmingwithlittleirrigation.WomenoftheHimalayasWomenoftheHimalayashavewovenanindelibleandcolorfulpatternofculturesandlifestylesthatispartofthefascinatingmystiqueofthisruggedandeconomicallymarginal
