3、stadingofawiderangeofgrammaticalstructuresinChinese.However,asthelinguistictheoryevolved,itbecamepossibletoreplaceaCaseapproachtowordorderwithaverb-raisinganalysis,whichseemstochallengethesignifycanceofCaseinthegrammarofChinese.Thispaperistoshowthattheempiricalgeneralizationssuppor
4、tingCaseintheearlierworksbutquestionedinsomeotherworksarestillvalid,andthattheresearchonCasefurthershedslightonotherissuessuchasthefinerstructureofclausesinChinese.0.Introduction1ThenotionofCaseandthetheoryofCaseintheframeworkofGovernmentandBinding(Chomsky1981)haveplayedaveryimport
5、antroleindescribingcross-linguisticgeneralizationsregardingwordorderandconstituentstructures.Languageswithovertmorphogicalcasemarkingsdemonstratewellhowcasesaregoodindicationsoforderandconstituency.Forinstance,anominativecase-markedelementisgenerallythesubjectofaclause,bearingaclos
6、erelationtoTense(orAgreement)andanaccusativecase-markedphraseisgenerallytheobjectofaverb,bearingacloserelationtotheverb.Therefore,nominativeandaccusativecasesaregoodcluestogrammaticalrelationsandthestruc-turalpositionsoccupiedbysubjectsandobjects;morphologicalcasescanbeunderstoodas
