2、gwithincreasingspeedandanimportantculturalheritageisbecominglost.Newland-scapesreplacethetraditionalonesgraduallyorsometimesabruptly.Thisarticleanalyzesthecharacteristicsandmechanismsoflandscapechangesatasettlementlevel,byusingcasestudiesinthecountrysideofsouthernFr

3、ancewherelandscapesareintransitionbetweennewresidentialurbanizationandlandabandonment.Structuralchangesinlanduse,buildingandfieldpatternsbetweentwotimeperiodsarestudiedusingaerialphotographscoveringaperiodfrom1960to1999.Thephotographswerescannedtoallowonscreendigital

4、izationandinterpretationofselectedfeaturesanddetails,whichwereconsecutivelymappedandanalyzedinaGIS.Changesobservedontheaerialphotographswerecomparedwiththepopulationstatisticandtheaccessibilityoftheplace.Allcasesshowverydifferentanduniquetrajectoriesofchangewithcomp

5、lexinteractionsbetweendifferentdrivingforces.Agriculturalintensificationandlandabandonmentactsimultaneouslywithdifferentformsofurbanizationinthecountryside.Althougheasilyrecognizableontheaerialphotographs,aquantitativeassessmentofthechangesinthedifferentstructuralcom

6、ponentsremainsdifficultandtheresultscanhardlyberelatedtochangesinpopulationcharacteristicsandaccessibility.Consequently,structuralandmorphologicalchangesobservedontheaerialphotographsleadtootherinterpretationsoftheunderlyingfunctionalprocessesthanthestatisticaldatado
