3、extremelycoldAntarctic,areknowntohavefeathersanddown,whicharelightweight,compactandextremelyefficientinpreventingheatloss.Nevertheless,themechanismsofheattransferthroughthepenguinfeathersanddown,andhowtheuniquecharacteristicsofpenguinfeathersanddownmakethemsuchgoodthermalinsulatorsarenot
4、fullyunderstood.Inthispaper,anintegratedmodelofheattransferthroughthepenguinfeathersanddownisdevelopedandcomputedusingfinitevolumemethod,withthegeometricalstructureofthebarbulesbeingconsidered.Monte-Carlomethodisadoptedtodeterminetheradiativeabsorptionandemissionconstantintheintegratedmo
5、del.Theeffectivethermalconductanceofpenguinfeathersanddowncomputedfromourmodelcomparedwellwiththeexperimentallymeasuredvaluereportedintheliterature.Threemodels(penguinmodel,randomfibremodel(fibreradius¼3mm)andrandomfibremodel(fibreradius¼10mm))arefurthersimulatedandcompared.Resultsshowedtha
