5、answhoregardtheircentralaimasbeingtosolveproblems,andthosewhoaremoreconcernedwithbuildingandunderstandingtheories.Thisdierenceofattitudehasbeenremarkedonbymanypeople,andIdonotclaimanycreditfornoticingit.Aswithmostcategorizations,itinvolvesacertainoversimplication,butn
6、otsomuchastomakeituseless.Ifyouareunsuretowhichclassyoubelong,thenconsiderthefollowingtwostatements.(i)Thepointofsolvingproblemsistounderstandmathematicsbetter.(ii)Thepointofunderstandingmathematicsistobecomebetterabletosolveprob-lems.Mostmathematicianswouldsaythatthere
7、istruthinboth(i)and(ii).Notallproblemsareequallyinteresting,andonewayofdistinguishingthemoreinterestingonesistodemonstratethattheyimproveourunderstandingofmathematicsasawhole.Equally,ifsomebodyspendsmanyyearsstrugglingtounderstandadicultareaofmathematics,1butdoesnotact
