1、ApplyingCognitiveLinguisticstoPedagogicalGrammar:TheCaseofOverAndreaTylerandVyvyanEvans1.IntroductionLanguagelearningisoneofthemostcomplicatedfeatsthathumanbeingsaccomplish.AnynumberofveryrealreasonsexistastowhyL2learningpresentstremendouschallenges.However,instructedL2learninghasbeenfurtherco
2、mplicatedbythefactthatimportantelementsofsystematicitythatexistinlanguagehavenotbeenappropriatelycapturedbythepedagogicalgrammarswhichunderliemodernforeignlanguageteachingtextbooksandmaterials.Forinstance,lexicalclasses,suchasEnglishprepositions,arerepresentedinthegrammars(andthetextbooksbased
3、onthem)inpiece-mealfashion.Whenstudents(andtheirteachers)encountervaryingusesoftheseforms,thesystematicrelationsbetweenthemultipleusesremainunexplained.Forexample,traditionalanalyseshavenotofferedanyexpla-nationsforwhythefourdifferentmeaningsfoundinthesentencesin(1a-d)areallassociatedwiththefo
4、rmover:(1)aThepictureisoverthemantlebThetelleratthecentralbankswitchedtheaccountovertoalocalbranchcThefilmisoverdArlingtonisovertheriverfromGeorgetownInsentence(1a)overisinterpretedasroughly‘locatedhigherthan’;insen-tence(1b)overisinterpretedasroughly‘transferred’;insentence(1c)overisinterpret
5、edasroughly‘completedorfinished’;andinsentence(1d)overisinterpretedasroughly‘ontheothersideof’.Suchvaryingmeaningsaretypicallypresented,iftheyareaddressedatall,asanunorganizedlistofunrelatedmeaningsthatareaccidentallycodedbythesamephonologicalform.Thisresultsinafragmentedpictureofthelexicalcla
6、ss,leavingthelearnerwiththeimpressionthatthevarioususesarearbitrary.Indeed,learn-ersofEnglishasasecondlanguageandmanyteachersofESLhavenotedthatacquiringthesemanticsofEnglishprepositionsisverydifficult(e.g.,Celce-Murcia&Larson-Freeman,1998).Inspiteoftherecognizeddifficulty,260AndreaTylerandVyvy
