3、325–1334,2012.Purpose:Thisretrospectivestudytestsifrunnerswhohabituallyforefootstrikehavedifferentratesofinjurythanrunnerswhohabituallyrearfootstrike.Methods:Wemeasuredthestrikecharacteristicsofmiddle-andlong-distancerunnersfromacollegiatecross-countryteamandquantifiedtheirhistoryofinjury,inc

4、ludingtheincidenceandrateofspecificinjuries,theseverityofeachinjury,andtherateofmild,moderate,andsevereinjuriespermilerun.Results:Ofthe52runnersstudied,36(69%)primarilyusedarearfootstrikeand16(31%)primarilyusedaforefootstrike.Approximately74%ofrunnersexperiencedamoderateorsevereinjuryeachyear

5、,butthosewhohabituallyrearfootstrikehadapproximatelytwicetherateofrepetitivestressinjuriesthanindividualswhohabituallyforefootstrike.Traumaticinjuryrateswerenotsignificantlydifferentbetweenthetwogroups.Ageneralizedlinearmodelshowedthatstriketype,sex,racedistance,andaveragemilesperweekeachcorr

6、elatesignificantly(PG0.01)withrepetitiveinjuryrates.Conclusions:Competitivecross-countryrunnersonacollegeteamincurhighinjuryrates,butrunnerswhohabituallyrearfootstrikehavesignificantlyhigherratesofrepetitivestressinjurythanthosewhomostlyforefootstrike.Thisstudydoesnottestthecausalbasesforthis

7、generaldifference.Onehypothesis,whichrequiresfurtherresearch,isthattheabsenceofamarkedimpactpeakinthegroundreactionforceduringaforefootstrikecomparedwitharearfootstrikemaycontributetolowerratesofinjuriesinhabitualforefootstrikers.KeyWords:RUN
