4、wastewatertreatmentincertaincircumstancesbutremovalofphosphorusisstronglydependentonthebedmedium.Calcium-,iron-andaluminium-richsolidmediaarerecommended.Abriefintroductiontotheuseandcost-effectivenessofconstructedwetlands(CWs)intreatingarangeofeffluentsisgiven.Thisstudy,usingbothlaboratoryte
5、stsandpilot-scaleconstructedwetlands,reportstheeffectivenessofgranularlateriteinremovingphosphorusandheavymetalsfromlandfillleachate.Initiallaboratorystudieshaveshownthatlateriteiscapableof99%removalofphosphorusfromsolution.Apilot-scaleexperimentalCWcontaininglateriteachieved96%removalofphos
6、phorus.Thisremovalismuchgreaterthanthatreportedinothersystems.Initialremovalsofaluminiumandironbypilot-scaleCWshavebeenupto85%and98%respectively.PercolatingcolumnsoflateritereducedCd,CrandPbtoundetectableconcentrations.Possibleapplicationofthislowcost,lowtechnology,visuallyunobtrusiveyeteffi
