2、ntraditionoffocusingonlyonmasscommunicationsfunctionasameansofsocialandpoliticalcontrol,andmakesacaseforexaminingthecontentofacommunicationthemeaningofsymbols,notonlythemotivesthatoriginatethemorthepurposestheyserve.Heseekstorecastthegoalofcommunicationsstudies,replacingthesearchfordeterministicl

5、orateincommunications.HewasappointedtothefacultyatIllinoisin1963andwasdirectorofitsInstituteforCommunicationResearchfrom196976.From197679,CareyheldtheGeorgeH.GallupChairattheUniversityofIowa,buthereturnedtoIllinoisin1979tobecomeDeanoftheCollegeofCom-munication,apositionhehelduntil1992.Hejoinedthe
