2、tGrandPrixcategory,i.e.,MotoGP.This99033cmclassificationreplacedwhathadbeena500cmclasssincethedawnofmotorcycleracingandwhereinrecentdecadesthetwo-strokeengineofsome3-or4-cylindersandproducingsome200hphadeliminatedallcompetitionfromfour-3strokeengineswhichwouldstruggletoproduceperhaps150hpfro

3、ma500cmengine.Consequently,thedesignersofracingengineshadtolearnnewdesigntechniquesandmuch,ifnotall,ofthetheoryoftuninglearnedthehardwayon2-strokeshadtoberapidlyunlearned.Manycompanies,suchasHonda,Yamaha,orDucati,tonamebutthree,alreadycompetedinWorldSuperbikeswhereallengines33werehistoricall

4、y1000cmfour-stroketwin-cylinder,or750cmfour-cylinder,or9003cmthree-cylinderunits.Withinsuchorganisationsmuchexperiencealreadyexistedondesigninganddevelopingfour-strokemulti-cylinderracingengines.However,inMotoGP,thechoiceofenginelayoutismuchwiderandtheselectionofthefinaldesignlayoutforMotoGP

5、racingoftendevolvedtopersonalchoice,copyingofthatwhichisdeemedtobecurrentlysuccessful,ortosomelong-heldbutasyetunproventheory.ThispaperattemptstosetoutsomelogicforanymechanicaldesigntobeselectedforMotoGPracingand,inparticular,showstheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofdesignswithtwotosixcylindersal

6、lnominallyproducingthesamepoweroutputofsome230hpat15000rpm.2.TheGeometricLayoutDesignParametersInastatementoftheobvious,theenginehastofitintoamotorcycleandbematedtoa(probablysix-speedmechanicallyfoot-operated)gearbox.Thismeansthatwidth,centre-of-gravitylocations,andweightoftheengineareallsig
