4、u.1TheSemanticsofReduplicationReduplicationexpressesawideandinitiallysomewhatarbitrary-seemingarrayofmeaningscross-linguistically.Thereis,however,acoresetofmeaningswhichrecursofrequentlyandinsomanylanguagesastodemandexplanation.ConsiderforexampletheEnglishw
5、ordshiggledy-piggledy,helter-skelter,pell-mell,andwilly-nilly.Thesereduplicativesshareasemanticcomponentoflackofcontrolwithreduplicativesfrommanyotherlanguages,e.g.Russiantjap-ljap(inaslipshodmanner)andBengaliulat-palat(helter-skelter).Othersenseswhichrecur
6、cross-linguisticallyincludeintensity,increasedquantity,scattering,plurality,diversity,memberofaclass,repetition,continuation,morethanappropriate,diminution,endearment,contempt,attenuation,augmentation,similarity,derogation,andhabituality(Moravcsik1978).Inad
7、ditiontothese,Nomura&Kiy-omi(1993)notedisorder,carelessness,pretense,reciprocity,aimlessness,andattempt.TheapparentincoherenceofthesetofmeaningsshewasexaminingledMoravcsik(1978:325)toconclude:Giventhatreduplicationisneithertheexclusiveexpressionofanyonemean
8、ingcategoryinlanguage,norarethemeaningsthatitisanexpres-sionofallsubsumableundergeneralclasses,noexplanatoryorpredictivegeneralizationaboutthemeaningsofreduplicativeconstructionscanbeproposed.[Emphasis
