2、FrenchparishchurchintheFrenchdioceseofLeMansfrom1620–1688.Scholarshavearguedthatthediocese’sprolificcommissionsofterracottastatuesandretablesrepresentedtheimpactoftheCouncilofTrent’sdrivetoeducatetheclergyandinstillinthemasenseofconnoisseurship;theclergyledthedioceseaspatrons.Yet
3、,theseworksofartarealsoquiteparticulartotheregion,suggestingthatotherfactorswereresponsiblefortheirproliferation.Thisarti-cleexaminesthestatuesandretableofSt-Léonard-des-Bois,commissionedinc.1630and1684.Usingpreviouslyunavailablearchivalmaterial,itproposestwonewpatronsforthesecom
4、missions,andreconsidersthemotivesforclericalandsecularleader-shipinthisruralparish.Itdemonstratesthattheruralworldwasnotisolatedanditissignificantthatbothpatronscamefrombeyondtheparish.Thearticleevaluatestheinfluenceuponthestatuesandretableofthecentralising‘Counter-Reformation’an
5、dlocalfactorssuchasgeography,regionaltraditions,andlocalevents.ItarguesthattheruralCounter-Reformationhadaparadoxicalidentity.ItbelongedtowidercurrentsinCatholicReform,andinthecaseofSt-Léonard,wasdrivenbytwopatronsdeter-minedtocreateanewpositionforthemselves.However,asbothofthese
