2、ccasions,historianshavelookedatInternationalRelationsTheoryforinsightsandconceptstohelpunderstandingwhyandhowtheColdWaroriginated.Whilethepostrevisionistparadigmwasinspiredbyrealism,forthelastdecadeandahalf,runningparallelwithbroadertheoreticaldevelopme
3、ntsinIR,largepartsofthedebateontheoriginsoftheColdWarhavefocusedontheroleofideas,ideology,andculture.However,theimportedinnovationshadtheeffectoffragmentingourtheoreticalunderstandingoftheoriginsoftheColdWar,ratherthanofferingaworkable,coherentsynthesis
4、.Moreover,theseaccountsdonotalwayssufficientlyaddressproblemsofagencyandcausality.ThedebateontheoriginsoftheColdWar,therefore,isinneedofcoherenttheoreticalframeworkswhicharecapableofremedyingtheseproblems.Thisarticlearguesthatapossiblewayofgeneratingsuch
5、aframeworkistakingacloserlookathermeneuticsandconstructivism.Overthedecades,thedebateontheoriginsoftheColdWarhasgrippedtheattentionofmanydiplomaticandinternationalhistorians.Thisdebatehastraditionallybeen1framedintermsoforthodoxy,revisionism,andpostrevi
6、sionism.Thediscussionsbetweenorthodoxandrevisionistscholarsfocusedonthequestionofwhoborethe2responsibilityofstartingtheconflict:theSovietUnionortheUnitedStates.InthelateMaartenVanAlsteinisaPhDcandidateintheDepartmentofPoliticalScienceattheUniversityofAnt
