4、wholisticapproachhasbeenusedtoinvestigatefunctionalconnectivitychangesinthebrainsofpatientssufferingfrommajordepressionusingresting-statefunctionalmagneticresonanceimaging(fMRI)data.Acanonicaltemplateofconnectivityin90differentbrainregionswasconstructedfromheal
5、thycontrolsubjectsandthisidentifiedasix-communitystructurewitheachnetworkcorrespondingtoadifferentfunctionalsystem.ThistemplatewascomparedwithfunctionalnetworksderivedfromfMRIscansofbothfirst-episodeandlonger-term,drugresistant,patientssufferingfromseveredepres
6、sion.Thegreatestchangeinbothgroupsofdepressedpatientswasuncouplingoftheso-called‘hatecircuit’involvingthesuperiorfrontalgyrus,insulaandputamen.Othermajorchangesoccurredincircuitsrelatedtoriskandactionresponses,rewardandemotion,attentionandmemoryprocessing.Avoxe
7、l-basedmorphometryanalysiswasalsocarriedoutbutthisrevealednoevidenceinthedepressedpatientsforalteredgrayorwhitematterdensitiesintheregionsshowingalteredfunctionalconnectivity.Thisisthefirstevidencefortheinvolvementofthe‘hatecircuit’indepressionandsuggestsapoten
