2、sofMg2+dopedP-MnOOHwhichisknownasfeitknechtiteisreported.FeitknechtiteisalayeredmaterialhavingtheCd12structure.ThecharacterizationofMg2+dopedfeitknechtitewasdonewithX-raypowderdiffraction,elementalanalysis,energydispersiveX-rayanalysis,scanningelectronmicroscopy,alternatingcurre
3、nt(AC)impedance,Fouriertransforminfraredspectroscopy,thermogravimetricanalysis,differentialscanningcalorimetry,averageoxidationstatetitrationsofmanganese,andaciditymeasurements.TheformationoffeitknechtiteisrelatedtotheMnO4-/Mn2+ratiousedinthesynthesis.Feitknechtitecanbeconverted
4、tosyntheticbirnessiteoroctahedrallayerbirnessite(OL-1)whichisaprecursortothe6.9Atunnelstructurematerialtodorokite.INTRODUCTIONThemineralfeitknechtite[3-MnOOH]wasfirststudiedsystematicallybyFeitknechtandMartiin1945[1].TheypreparedamixedphaseofMnOOHandMn304byoxidationofanaqueoussu
5、spensionofMn(OH)2.TheyassignedthismixedphasematerialonthebasisofX-raypowderdiffractionmethodsandreferredtoitashydrohausmannite.Frondelin1952reported[2]thatamineralfromFranklin,NewJerseyhadasimilarX-raypowderdiffractionpatternasthatofhydrohausmannite.In1962,Feitknecht,Brunner,and
6、Oswald[3]suggestedonthebasisofelectronmicroscopydatathatthematerialreferredtoashydrohausmannitebyFeitknechtandMarti[1]wasamixtureofMn304and03-MnOOH,whichwasthereafterreferredtoasfeitknechtite.Thestructureof03-MnOOHisnowrecognizedashavingtheCdl2structure[4].TherearetwootherMnOOHp
7、hases.AllthreephasesconsistofMnO3(OH)3octahedrathatshareedgesandverticesindifferentways.OneoftheothertwophasesiscL-MnOOHwhichisknownasgroutiteandhasadoublechainstructure[4].Theotherphasey-MnOOHisknownasmanganiteandhasacorrugatedstructure[4].Differentoxidationconditionscanyieldsy
