2、eoreticalmapthatdelineatesthefledgingfieldofChinesenight-timeeconomystudies,highlightsitssignificance,andsug-gestspossiblefuturedirectionsforitsdevelopment.Itwillbrieflyexplicatethenight-timeeconomy’ssignificanceforthestate,society,andeconomyinChina.Itwillmapoutcurrentdevelopments
3、inEnglish-languagestudiesofnightlifeandthenight-timeeconomyandthepresentstateofthefieldinChina.Itwillalsoidentifyseveralproblematicsandanalyzewhytheyareespeciallytheoreticallyrelevanttotheimmediatedevelopmentofthefield.The“night-timeeconomy,”asubsetoftheculturaleconomycomposedofba
4、rs,danceclubs,karaokeestablishments,raveparties,live-musicvenues,andothernightlifeforms(whilenotincludingthecommercialsexindustries),hasincreasinglygainedtheattentionofpolicymakersandscholarsintheWestsincethe1990s.Acontemporarynight-timeeconomybegantoemergeinChinain1979(Zhu2006a),
5、butitsgrowthremainedslowinthe1980sandearly1990s.Inthesecondhalfofthe1990s,thisnight-timeeconomyexpandedexponentiallyasurbanChinesebegantoearnestlypursueculturalconsumptionandtheyoungenthusiasticallyembracedraveparty–inspiredMatthewM.ChewisanassistantprofessorintheDepartmentofSocio
