3、presentativeofCongressinEurope,hewasamajornegotiatoroftheeventualpeacetreatywithGreatBritain,andchieflyresponsibleforobtainingimportantloansfromAmsterdambankers.Adams'revolutionarycredentialssecuredhimtwotermsasGeorgeWashington'svicepresidentandhisownelectionasthesecondp
4、residentoftheUnitedStates.Duringhisonetermaspresident,hewasfrustratedbybattlesinsidehisownFederalistParty(byafactionledbyAlexanderHamilton)andthenewlyemergentbi-partisandisagreementswithJeffersonianRepublicans.Duringhisterm,healsosignedthecontroversialAlienandSeditionAct
5、s.ThemajoraccomplishmentofhispresidencywashispeacefulresolutionoftheQuasi-WarcrisiswithFrancein1798.AfterAdamswasdefeatedforreelectionbyThomasJefferson(atthetime,Adams'vice-president),heretiredtoMassachusetts.Heandhiswife,AbigailAdams,foundedanaccomplishedfamilylineofpol
6、iticians,diplomats,andhistoriansnowreferredtoastheAdamspoliticalfamily.AdamswasthefatherofJohnQuincyAdams,thesixthPresidentoftheUnitedStates.Hisachievementshavereceivedgreaterrecognitioninmoderntimes,thoughhiscontributionswerenotinitiallyascelebratedasthoseofotherFounder
