2、,MarxandEngels,andinthe20thHorkheimerandAdorno.Mighttheyberegardedasprefigurationsofwhatinapost-bourgeoisworldwouldbecomelessuncommon?Theirpatternsdiffered.MarxandEngels,borntwoyearsapart,werecontemporaries;oncetheirfriendshipwasformed,collaborationbetweenthemnevercease
3、d.AdornowaseightyearsHorkheimer’sjunior,andacloseworkingrelationshipcamemuchlater,withmanymorevicissitudes:initialmeetingin1921,intermittentfrictionandexchangeuptothemid-1930s,concordonlyinAmericanexilefrom1938onwards,morepointedlydistinctidentitiesthroughout.Thegen-er

5、exchangebelowmakesclear.Thisuniquedocumentistherecord,takendownbyGretelAdorno,ofdiscussionsoverthreeweeksinthespringof1956,withaviewtotheproduc-tionof—asAdornoputsit—acontemporaryversionofTheCommunistManifesto.Informitmightbedescribed,werejazznotanathematoAdorno,asaphi
6、losophicaljam-session,inwhichthetwothinkersimprovisefreely,oftenwildly,oncentralthemesoftheirwork—theoryandpractice,labourandleisure,dominationandfreedom—inapoliticalregisterfoundnowhereelseintheirwriting.Amidacareeningfluxofarguments,aphorismsandasides,inwhichthetrench
