2、ntadvancementofthistheoryisthatlanguageusersareinpossessionofmultipleidentifications.Thesemultipleidentities/identificationsareconstructed,transformed,andreconstructedthroughdiscursivepracticesindifferentsocioculturalandinstitutionalhabitusconstitutedthroughhome,school,andcommunit

3、y.Inthispaper,IexplorethemultipleandcontestingformsofidentitiesdisplayedbysomeadolescentstudentsinEFLclassroomsinHongKongthroughanalyzingnaturallyoccurringclassroominteractiondata.Iwillshowhowsomeoftheseidentitiesreflectstudents’attemptstotraversebackandforththelinguisticandcultur

4、albordersoftheirnativeandtargetlanguagesasaformofself-representation.IproposeapedagogyofconnectionwhichpredicatesupontheneedforESL/EFLteacherstoguardagainstthequestforasingleunifiedidentity(e.g.alearnerofEnglishinaneutralsense)fromthestudentswhichmightofteninduceresistance,andcapi

6、.Theimportantroleofidentityinsecondlanguagelearninghasbeendocumentedinadelugeofresearchoverthelastdecade.Forexample,Miller(2000)arguesthatlearninganewlanguageislikeconstructinganewidentityasthelearnertriestoestablishsocialmembershipinanewcommunity.Kramsch(2000)showsL2learningasadi

7、alogicprocesswhichinvolvestheconstructionof“theself”and“theother”.InrespondingtoL2semioticstimuli,L2learnersareeagertoasserttheir“true”self(p.151)andexpresswhattheyintendedtosay.Norton(2000)findsthatL2learners’identityisoftenfoundtobedirectlyrelatedtotheirinvestmentinthetargetlang
