3、totripwhenrequired.Whilesecurityisnotimprovedbyincreasedredundancy,dependabilityis.Clearly,theimpactonthepowersystemwhenaprotectiondeviceisnotfunctioningwhenrequiredismuchlessseverewhenthereisaredundantdevicethattakesoverthejob.Ifthetworedundantdevicesareofequalper

4、formance,thereshouldbenodetrimentaleffectatallonpowersystemoperations,andanon-functioningdevicewouldjustneedtoberepairedorreplaced.Thetelecomsindustryappliesa“nosinglepointoffailure”criteriaforcommunicationsnetworks.Reliabilityiscommonlyachievedbyconfiguringthecomm

5、unicationslinksinrings.Aringprovidesanalternativecommunicationspathratherthanaduplicatedcommunicationscable,minimizingcapitalinvestmentcostsandstillsatisfyingreliabilityrequirements.Forrelaying,thepreferredmethodofmeetingreliabilityrequirementshasbeentousephysicall

6、yseparate,redundantprotectiondevices.Apilotprotectionschemeconsistsofrelays,communicationsinterfacedeviceandacommunicationschannel.Alloftheseneedtofunctionproperlyfortheprotectionschemetooperateasintended.Thereliabilityofapilotprotectionscheme,evenwithachannelindep

7、endentZone1,wouldbenefitasmuchfromredundantcommunicationchannelsasredundantrelaydevices.However,independentchannelsarenotalwayseconomicallyjustifiedduetothehighcostinvolvedforasecondcommunicationslink.Thispaperisexaminingredundancyrequirementsforrelayingandpresents

8、anewapproach.Thepapersuggeststhatasingledevicewithredundantmodulescanaccomplishashigh,orhigher,redundancyasthephysicallyseparateboxconcept.Thepap
