2、alsobeenopposingclaimswhicharguedthatConfucianismplayedapositiveroleonsocialdevelopment.What,indeed,wastheroleofConfucianisminthesocialdevelopmentofKorea?ThispaperchampionsthepositiveroleofConfucianisminthisdebate.Incontrastwithotherresearchmethodsusedtodate,thispaperattemptstoexplainConfucian

3、ismasprovidingfundamental“significance”tothesocialdevelopmentbyimbuingitwithreligioussignificance.ThepapercoversConfucianismasaproductofreligioussignificanceandneedsaswellasofself-sacrificingworkethicsandzealforeducationwhichbecamethefoundationforKorea’seconomicgrowth.Inparticular,“filialpiety

4、”isexaminedasthecoreofreligioussignificanceanddemandmadebyConfucianism.ThepaperexaminesthereligioussignificanceinherentinConfucianvalueoffilialpietyandillustrateshowthevaluecametobeapowerfuleconomicmotivatorduringtheprocessofinstitutionalization.Inaddition,theeconomiceffectoffilialpietyinrelat

5、iontotheeconomicgrowthincontemporaryKoreansocietyisexaminedindetail.Thereligioustendencyoffilialpietywhichattemptsto“remember”and“represent”one’sancestorsactedasimportantspiritualethosinKorea’ssocialdevelopmentcenteredoneconomicgrowth.Filialpietydidnotstopatbeinganethicalstandard;itwasthefunda
