2、allimitationinfigurativelanguagetheoriesistheproductionandusageoffiguresofspeech,probablyduetotheintensiveresearcheffortontheircomprehension.Theaimistoanalysehyperbolefromasemanticperspectiveinordertodeviseasemasiologicaltaxonomywhichenablesustounderstandthenature
3、andusesofthetrope.InordertoanalyseandclassifyhyperbolicitemsacorpusofnaturallyoccurringconversationsextractedfromtheBritishNationalCorpuswasexamined.Theresultssuggestthattheevaluativeandquantitativedimen-sionsarekey,definingfeatureswhichoftenco-occurandshouldthere

6、ncethe1980s,therehasbeenarenewedinterestinfigurativelanguagenotonlyinliterarystudies,butalsoinotherfieldsofresearch.Infact,researchonfigurationhasemergedasanewanddistinctdiscipline,thatoffigurativelanguagestudies.Mostofthisinterest,however,hasbeendirectedatexplain
7、inghowfiguresofspeecharecomprehended,giventheirnonliteralnature.Sincethebulkofstudieshasalmostinvariablyconcentratedonthereceptionprocess,intermsoffigureunderstanding,itisnotsurprisingthatnowadaysacruciallimitationinfigurativelanguagetheoriesistheproductionprocess
8、ofnon-literallanguage.Thus,Turner(1998:83)correctlyar-gues,“thestudyoffigure,oneoftheoldestbodiesofknowledgeinthehumansciences,remainsinouragestillinits
