1、AbstractInrecentyears,filmsandtelevisionprograms,especiallytheboomingdocumentarieshavebeenplayinganincreasinglyimportantroleinculturalexchanges.Thetranslationofculture-specificitems,asanindispensablepartofculture-themedfilmsandtelevisionprograms,makesabigdifferenceinthepromotionofChineseculture.Inth
2、econtextofthat,thisthesisundertakestostudythetranslationconstraintsandtranslationstrategiesofChineseculturespecificitemsusingtheEnglishversionofABiteofChina1asthedatabase.ABiteofChina1isaseriesfooddocumentaryreleasedbyChinaCentralTelevision,whichnotonlyintroducesChinesefoodbutalsorevealsChinesetradi
3、tionalcustomsinacomprehensiveway.AccordingtoAixela’sresearchonculture-specificitems,theauthorhaspickedout200culture-specificitemstogetherwiththeirtranslationsfromtheEnglishversionofABiteofChina1.Moreover,the200culture-specificitemshavebeenclassifiedthemintoelevencategoriesaccordingtotheircharacteris
4、ticsandfeatures.ThestudyundertakestoanalyzethetranslationconstraintsandtranslationstrategiesofChineseculture-specificitemsbystatisticalmethodandillustration.Theresultofthestudyisasfollows:(1)Therearemainlytwokindsoffactorswhichwouldinfluencetheoptionoftranslationstrategies:hypertextualfactorsandtext
5、ualfactors.Hypertextualfactorscanbefurtherdividedintoideology,targetaudienceandexpectation.Textualfactorscanbefurtherdividedintocontext,spaceandtime,culturalandhistoricalbackgrounds.(2)TherearetotallyseventranslationstrategiesutilizedinthetranslationofChineseculture-specificitemsinABiteofChina1.Tran
6、slationstrategiesthatareutilizedinthetranslationofculture-specificitemscanbelistedasfollowsfromthemostfrequentlyusedtotheleastfrequentlyusedones:linguistictranslation,alphabeticalconversion,absoluteglobalization,domestication,intratextualexplanation,limitedglobalizationandIsynonyms.Apartfromthat,its
