4、hikikomoriwithintheeconomicdownturnofJapanandthesubsequenteconomicpressureonindividuals,alsoreflectedinthegrowingnumberoffurītāandNEET.Psychologically,hikikomoriisaradicalversionoftheotaku,theInternetandcomputeraddict,whocancommunicateonlywithinhisvirtualpeergroup.However,bothsociologicaltheoriesan
5、dpopularnarrativeshaverecentlyobservedagrowingacceptanceandevenanimprovementoftheimageofthesepsycho-socialpatterns.WhilethestoryofthecharmingotakucalledDenshaotoko(‘trainman’)hasbeenadaptedintoallvisualmedia,somehiki-komori,too,havebeenpromotedtomangaheroes,e.g.,inTakimotoTatsu-hiko’sWelcometotheNH
6、KandOkuHiroya’sMēterunokimochi.SociologistIshikawaRyōkoinherrecentfieldstudyreadshikikomoriasaratherpositive,thoughlong-termprocessofself-confirmation.ThischangeintheimageofotakuandhikikomorithereforereflectsasubliminalrevolutionoftraditionalandoutdatedJapaneseconceptsofobligation,work,andmasculini
