3、areacquired.Remotesensinginvolvesmeasuringelectromagneticradiation(commonly,reflectedsunlight)fromfeaturesontheEarthssurface(Aplin,2003).Land-basedfeaturesmaybecategorizedaccordingtolandcoverclasses(e.g.,grass,concrete,water,etc.)(Smithetal.,2003),andsincedifferentlandcoverfeaturesreflect
4、radiationindifferentways,remotelysensedimagesprovideabasicrepresentationoflandcovervariationontheEarthssurface.Evenwherelandcoverinformationisnottheultimategoalofremotesen-singstudies,itisoftenausefulaidforfurtheranalysis.Giventhisimportanceoflandcovertothefieldofremotesensingand,inpartic
5、ular,themanyphysicalgeo-graphicalapplicationsofremotesensing,thisProgressReportwillfocusonrecentdevelopmentsinlandcoverresearch.Ingeneral,therearetwomainareasofremotesensing-basedlandcoverresearch,(1)environmentalmanagementand(2)environmentalunderstanding.Environmen-talmanagementreferstot
6、hecontrolanduseoflandcoverdistributionstoexploitlandresourceswhilesafeguardingenvironmentalconcerns.Environmentalunder-standingreferstothescientificanalysisofprocesses(bothnaturalandthosecausedbyhumankind)involvedindetermininglandcover.Eachofthesegeneralresearchareasisdiscussedinturnbut,g
