2、histori-calsketch,whichaimstocontextualizethefrequencyfactorintermsoftheevolutionofSLAresearch.Althoughresearchershaveknownaboutafrequencyeffectforsometime,untilrecently,wehavelackedneurologicallyplausiblemodelsandtechnologicallyconve-nientmeansofmeasuringandtestingfrequen
3、cyeffectsininput.Still,asrelevantandimportantasafrequencyfactoris,itrequiresgreaterdefinitionandqualification.Forinstance,L2learnersareagentsoftheirownlearningprocess.Theydonotmerelyrecordfrequency;theycategorizefrequentlyoccurringpatterns,abstract,andgeneral-izefromthem.H
4、igherlevelgeneralizationsemergefrominteractions,imposetop-downexpectanciesonfuturedata,and,inturn,areal-teredbythedatainaperpetuallydynamicinterplay.Inasimilarfashion,itisincumbentonSLAresearchersnottobesatisfiedwithafrequencyexplanation,buttointerpretit—inshort,tomakesens
5、eoffrequency.IamimpressedbyNickEllis’s“FrequencyEffectsinLanguageProcessingandAcquisition.”Ihavebeenawareforsometimeofthepowerfuldistributionalregularitiesinlanguage.Theymakelanguagetheinherentlyfine-tooledandac-quirablesystemofcommunicationthatitis.However,Iamnewlyappreci
6、ativeofthebreadthofscholarshipthatEllishasbroughttobearontheimportantissueofhumanbeings’capacitytoperceiveandmakeuseoffrequencyinfor-mation.Secondlanguageacquisition(SLA)researchclearlyneedstobein-formedbysuchworkinpsycholinguistics.Writingwithauthorityanddrawingonstudiesi
