2、t.In-fibreBragggrating(FBG)sensorsareoneofthemostexcitingdevelopmentsinthefieldofopticalfibresensorsinrecentyears.Comparedwithconventionalfibre-opticsensors,FBGsensorshaveanumberofdistinguishingadvantages.Significantprogresshasbeenmadeinapplicationstostrainandtemperaturemeasurements.FBGsensors

3、provetobeoneofthemostpromisingcandidatesforfibre-opticsmartstructures.ThisarticlepresentsacomprehensiveandsystematicoverviewofFBGsensortechnologyregardingmanyaspectsincludingsensingprinciples,properties,fabrication,interrogationandmultiplexingofFBGsensors.ItisanticipatedthatFBGsensorsystem

4、swillbecommercializedandwidelyappliedinpracticeinthenearfutureduetothematurityofeconomicalproductionofFBGsandtheavailabilityofcosteffectiveinterrogationandmultiplexingtechniques.Yun-JiangRaowasbornintheinterferencepatternproducedbyoppositelypropagat-Yunnan,China.Hereceivedingmodesofargon-

5、ionlaserradiationwasfirstreportedhisMEngandPhDdegreesin1978(Hilletal1978).However,pioneeringworkatinOptoelectronicsattheUni-theUnitedTechnologyResearchCentre,whichisregardedversityofChongqing,China,asamilestoneforin-fibreBragggrating(FBG)sensors,in1986and1990.In1988hewasemployedasalecturera

6、twaspublishedelevenyearslater(Meltzetal1989).ThistheUniversityofChongqing,side-writingtechniquecreatesaBragggratingdirectlyinwhereheledaresearchthefibrecoreusingaholographicinterferometerillumi-teamtodevelopthefirstnatedwithacoherentultravioletsource.Versatilityinthefullyautomaticsingle-mod

7、efabricationofFBGshasbeengainedfromthefactthatfibrearc-fusionsplicingma-chineinChina.From1991theBraggwavelengthisindependentofthewritinglaserto1992heworkedonall-used.SubsequenttothisinitialworkinterestinFBGshasfibreoptically-addressedsil-increasedconsiderablyinrecenty
