2、ion,theoriginalprogressivesenter-tainedviewsthattoday’sprogressives,iftheyknewofthem,wouldrejectasdecidedlyunprogressive(Gerstle1994).Inparticular,theprogressivesofacenturyagoviewedtheindustrialpoorandothereconomicallymar-ginalgroupswithgreatambivalence.P
3、rogressiveEraeconomicreformsawthepoorasvictimsinneedofupliftbutalsoasthreatsrequiringsocialcontrol,afundamentaltensionthatmanifesteditselfmostconspicu-ouslyintheappealtoinferiorheredityasascientificbasisfordistinguish-ingthepoorworthyofupliftfromthepoorwho
4、shouldberegardedasthreatstoeconomichealthandwell-being.So,whileprogressivesdidadvocateforlabor,theyalsodepictedmanygroupsofworkersasundeservingofuplift,indeedasthecauseratherthantheconsequenceoflowwages(Leonard2003b).Whileprogressivesdidadvocateforwomen’s
