3、hts,andsocialism,aswellasmanyotherprogressivecauses.EarlychildhoodandillnessHelenAdamsKellerwasbornatanestatecalledIvyGreen[3]inTuscumbia,Alabama,onJune27,1880,toCaptainArthurH.Keller,aformerofficeroftheConfederateArmy,andKateAdamsKeller,acousinofRobert
4、E.LeeanddaughterofCharlesW.Adams,aformerConfederategeneral.[4]TheKellerfamilyoriginatesfromSwitzerland.[5]HelenKellerwasnotbornblindanddeaf;itwasnotuntilshewasnineteenmonthsoldthatshecontractedanillnessdescribedbydoctorsas"anacutecongestionofthestomacha
5、ndthebrain,"whichcouldpossiblyhavebeenscarletfeverormeningitis.Theillnessdidnotlastforaparticularlylongtime,butitleftherdeafandblind.Atthattime,shewasabletocommunicatesomewhatwithMarthaWashington,[6]thesix-year-olddaughterofthefamilycook,whounderstoodhe
