2、isreputationasapoet.InhisyouthPopewasfirstintroducedtotheliteraryworldofLondonbythethenelderlydramatistWycherley.Later,about1713,heandagroupofhisfriends,includingSwift,formedaScriblerusClubtowritetogetherthe"MemorisofMartinusScriblerus"toridicule"allthefalsetastesinle
3、arning".In1712,whenPopeknewofaquarrelbetweentwoaristocraticfamiliesbecauseaRomanCatholicLordPetrehadforciblycutoffalockofhairofaMissArabellaFermor,hewaspersuadedbyhisfriendstowriteapoemtoburlesquetheincidentandmakeitexplodeinlaughter.Theresultwas"TheRapeoftheLock"whic
4、hfirstappearedintwocantoesandenjoyedagreatandinstantaneoussuccess,andthenitwasexpandedbythepoetintofivecantoesrepublishedin1747.PopedidnotsidedefinitelyeitherwiththeWhigsorwiththeTories.HewasfamiliarwiththeliterarymenoftheWhigsAddisonandSteel,andwroteaprologueforAddis
5、on'stragedy"Cato",yetinhisdescriptivepoem"WindsorForest",hemadepoliticalallusionsmeanttotheTories.PopespentnearlytenyearsonthetranslationofHomer,finishingthe"Iliad"in1720andthe"Odessey"in1726,withthehelpoftwoCambridgescholarsinthecaseofthe"Odessey".Afterthathewrotetwo
6、well-knownworks"AnEssayonMan"andthefour"MoralEssays".InthemeantimePopespendanumberofyearswritingandtouchinguphisgreatsatiricalpoem"TheDunciad,inwhichheattackedmanyofhispersonalenemies,includingLouisandthenColleyCibberthepoetlaureateofthetime.Inthelastyearsofhislifehea
7、lsowrote"Satires"inimitationofthegreatsatiricalpoetofancientRome,Horace.DuringhislifetimePopequarrelledwithanumberofotherwriters,buthisfameasapoetwasestablishedratherearlyinlifeandhisinfluenceuponotherpoetswasverygreatbothduringhistimeandafter.OfPope'sshorterpiecesofe
